Turning Adversity Into Resilience

Our vision at the Hanna Institute is to raise public awareness about childhood trauma’s effects on all aspects of life by serving as the regional hub for Trauma-Informed Care (TIC) and Resilience training in the North Bay of San Francisco for parents, educators, health care providers and more. This includes spearheading relevant policy and legislative initiatives both on the state and national level.

On a local level, we’re taking action steps towards becoming the backbone of Sonoma Valley by collectively building a self-healing community alongside citizens, non-profits, schools, social philanthropists, and caregivers alike. This 10-15 year process collaboratively utilizes the strengths of each stakeholder through open continuous communication, shared measurement systems and resources, as well as mutually reinforcing activities and a common strategic vision.

What is Trauma?

What is TIC?

What is Resilience?

“Trauma is an umbrella term used to describe the inability of an individual or a community to respond in a healthy way physically, emotionally, and mentally to acute or chronic stress.”

– WA State Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction

Its defined as the tools to help survivors of trauma empower themselves to rebuild their life with a sense of control and purpose.

HOW: TIC redefines organizational structure and treatment framework by establishing a foundation of understanding, recognizing, and responding to the effects of all types of trauma. It does so by placing an emphasis on a holistic culture of health through collective physical, emotional, mental and spiritual safety.

Put another way– Post-Traumatic Growth (PTG).

It includes multiple skills like optimism, self-confidence, the drive to overcome obstacles and acquire the skills needed for survival, and a sense of community.

Examples:

1. the ability to adapt in the face of change
2. the ability to cope well with adverse conditions
3. the ability to pick yourself up from hard times to take a step forward toward progress
